TB7 D&L Lecture 1; The Dual Route Cascaded Model (Coltheart, 2001)

Advantages

  • Very high rates of accuracy in reading of both REGULAR and IRREGULAR words
  • Simulates several aspects of word learning in skilled readers including;
  • *Word & NON-word effects (non-words read more slowly)
  • *Word-length effects (LARGE effect for non-words, small for words)
  • *Pseudohomophones read faster than NON-pseudohomophones
  • ****Regularity and frequency effects! Regular and high frequency read FASTER than irregular, low freq words, with a pronounced combined effect.
  • The DRC is supported by fMRI and acquired dyslexia data

Disadvantages

  • An ANGLOCENTRIC model. Alphabetic languages typical in the West can differ in their transparency, logographic languages dont involve GPC.
  • Although it simulates word reading in skilled readers well (adults), it does NOT explain the development from non-skilled to skilled reading (children).

Evaluation

Although not providing much explanation re; skilled reading development or as biologically plausible as connectionist models, the DRC is currently the most accurate model in terms of accounting for real-world data.
