Causes

Karl Liebnecht and Rosa Luxemburg sought to establish a state based on Communist ideals
At the end of December 1918, Sparticists formed German Communist Party. (KPD)

Effects

December 1918 demonstrations against government led to clashes with the army and deaths of 16 sparticists
After attempt on 6th January 1919 to overthrow, Ebert and defence minister used the Reichswehr and Freikorps to put down rebellion.
Liebnecht and Luxemburg captured and killed.
Further uprising in March in Berlin resulted in death of 1000.
Another uprising in April in Munich crushed with great severity by Freikorps.

Overall summary

Overall unsuccessful and resulted in lots of deaths.
