Social Epidemiology: Levels of Analysis Critique

Advantages

  • Provides context for other perspectives
  • Helps to understand why the patterns at smaller levels occur
  • Retains a detailed analysis whilst trying to understand phenomena in the context in which they occur
  • More appropriate investigation because health behaviour is shaped by wide social and environmental changes

Disadvantages

  • Being used to describe general socio-psychological research at a population level, unrelated to health (Zielhuis & Kiemeney 2001)
  • Single level analysis can provide detail
  • There are so many factors at different levels, it wouldn't be useful to not have some focus
  • Must ensure you take an interaction/embedded approach - Focussing only on the social aspects without considering factors at the individual level is also flawed

Evaluation

Useful approach to understanding health behaviour in the context in which it occurs, however should retain an interactional approach to get the most useful information
