SLT strengths and weaknesses

Advantages

  • CULTURAL CHANGES - AN less common in non-Western cultures but incident rates increasing rapidly as traditional values are being displaced by Western cultural thinness ideals
  • E.g. Mumford et al 1991 found heightened levels of AN among Arab and Asian women who moved to western cultures.
  • MEDIA INFLUENCES - DiDomenico and Anderson 1992 found that womens magazines had more articles and advertisements focussed on losing weight than mens magazines, with 10 times more content concerning dieting in magazines aimed at females aged 18-24.

Disadvantages

  • INCONSISTENT RESULTS FOR MATERNAL INFLUENCES - Pike and Rodin 1991 found that there was no evidence for daughters imitating the weight concern of their parents
  • E.g. Ogden and Stewart 2000 found that although mothers and daughters were similar in weight and BMI, there was no association for their registration eating or body dissatisfaction.
  • DIATHESIS STRESS MODEL - SLT one example of a stressor that could trigger AN, however, if media was the major cause, then we would see many more cases. The missing factor is a diathesis, an underlying vulnerability to develop AN.
  • E.g. genetic factors. Therefore, biological and non biological factors is more valid than social learning processes alone.
