Russia in the BRICs groups

Strengths

  • It's the worlds 9th largest economy
  • It has a large cultural tourist industry, which will bring in large amounts of money.
  • Their history is of global significance, which may make people want to visit the area. Ideology can be a significant thing in making people going to visit Russia.
  • It has a diverse population.

Weaknesses

  • It's the most unequal of all the emerging/developing countries.
  • Russia's population has decreased in most of the years 1991-2015, and has never recovered to its 1991 level
  • Its economy is unbalanced. Few people control a large portion of Russia's wealth.
  • Dependent on oil and gas exports- without this, they would loose a large amount of money.
  • Russian is rarely spoken outside of Russia- may be difficult to communicate?
  • Much of Russia is uninhabitable which can mean that they are unable to use much of their land to their benefit.

Opportunities

  • Its large cultural tourist industry could bring in significant amounts of revenue from purchases made by tourists.
  • Their global history may bring many people to the country and then boost their economy.
  • They should update their navy and aircraft if they were to make more of an impact.
  • If they reduced their pollution, it could give them a better image around the world.
  • They are quite a powerful country, but not as much as they could be. If they strengthened their economy, they may be a much more powerful country. The economy is the thing that holds up a country to having a superpower status.

Threats

  • Much of Russia's aircraft and naval stock is ageing.
  • They have a pollution legacy from industrialization
  • There has been a reduction in Russia's influence since 1991 (though Putin is trying to make their influence more significant)
  • Its manufacturing halved after 1991, but under the USSR they produced large amount of things like medicine or food
