Quarrying Impacts

Advantages

  • Quarries employ lots of locals- this brings a lot of money into the local economy
  • When a quarry is build, good transport links are built for trucks- an improved infrastructure will attract local businesses and boost the local economy
  • Some quarries are used by schools for educational visits
  • Quarries that have been closed down can be used for recreation e.g. climbing
  • The landscape is often restored after quarries have been closed down- this can create new habitats and attracts new species of wildlife into an area

Disadvantages

  • Tourists could be put off from visiting an area that has a quarry because they're noisy
  • When a quarry closes down, that could be very expensive as you may need to drill holes and put warning signs
  • People are annoyed by the heavy traffic caused by slow vehicles leaving quarries
  • Quarries have a very dangerous environment
  • Habitats are usually destroyed by quarrying

Evaluation

Hope Quarry, Castleton- Located in the Peak District, Supplies 2m tonnes of limestone, 1.3m tonnes of cement, 182 local people employed, has the multiplier effect as there are huge benefits for the local economy as locally employed people support their nearby shops. They have made it less of a problem by planting plants to reduce visual impact, reduced dust and spent £15million on transport.
