Development (Growth & change)

Other information

  • Porphyria = Social, comes back late at night and then oppressed by being forced to eternally worship a man
  • Lover = Seemed passive as Porphyria had to do everything but actually is very dangerous
  • Peter Grimes = Lack of remorse to be guilty when he was condemned and haunted by his father and the boys
  • The Lab = Wants to get rid of threats, but the reader doesn't actually know if she does, not very much development
  • MLD = Duke tolerated the Duchess' blushes and presents until he felt too threatened so he had to eliminate her
  • RG = Wilde presents the experience of the soldier, moves the poem on to the tortuous experiences ( "imps" ), reveals the hypocrisy and the corruption of the Victorian judiciary system and then presents more religious ideas as the Bible was the only book the prisoners could read due to the process of atonement
  • Porphyria = Presented to make the cottage warm because of the fire and block out the storm by coming back
  • Lover = Only killed her because he "found a thing to do" and so that she could worship him forever. Undermined the power of God "Yet God never said a word"
  • Peter Grimes = Hypocritical society, only condemned Peter because the last of his boys appeared to be of noble blood
  • The Lab = She never actually commits her crime in the poem, she only talks about it in the "Devil's Smithy"
  • MLD = By putting the Duchess as a mural on the wall, the Duke is constantly reminded of his lack of power and control over her. Also it is a veiled threat to his future wives; this could be you if you do not obey me
  • RG = Wilde condemned to Reading Gaol after being found guilty of being in a homosexual relationship with a noble in Victorian England
