Pain: Treatment Critique

Advantages

  • ACT based treatment was effective at improving physical functioning, pain specific variables and psychosocial functioning (Gilbert et al 2013)
  • Multidisciplinary approach can be used to reduce pain but also improve functioning and self-help
  • Respondent and cognitive methods can teach resources that foster self-management
  • Behavioural methods are good for short-term and may help prevent acute pain reaching a chronic level
  • Shifted focus to the importance of pain acceptance in the treatment process

Disadvantages

  • ACT based treatment did not significantly reduce pain intensity
  • Cognitive methods require dedication and mental determination - If link between cognition an pain experience is not clear, participants may not be invested
  • Behavioural methods are passive for the participant but time-consuming for the administer
  • CBT more effective in children, with only small effects in adults and some argue that the methodological measurements are improving rather than the therapy itself (Eccleston et al 2009)

Evaluation

An integrated treatment approach is proving effective, however it relies on patient's being dedicated and will likely only help cope with the pain rather than completely remove it
