Pain: Psychosocial Factors in Paediatric Pain Critique

Advantages

  • Research shows the impact of catastrophising when controlling for factors such as age and negative affectivity
  • Acknowledges that social factors will affect the individual experience of pain and the way others treat them

Disadvantages

  • The effects of depression and anxiety rely on self-report such as e-diaries and thus may not reflect the true pain experience if participants have a poor ability to self-reflect and express emotions in words
  • Found that children with persistent pain suffer from sleeping problems but don't know the direction of the relationship

Evaluation

There is supporting evidence for the role of psychosocial factors in paediatric pain, and they provide a way to maximise treatment of pain. However, there are measurement issues to be addressed.
