StrengthsGetting Started
- Rio offers better healthcare than in the countryside, and the children and elderly have better access to vaccinations
- In Rio the literacy rate is 95% for children over the age of 10, which is much higher than the national average
- Expansion of industrial areas has led to growth of the economy, and the service (tertiary) sector has increased to cater for the needs of the industrial workers
- Community - in the favelas, the community is very close-knit, and also many residents recycle waste and building materials regularly
|
Weaknesses
- Crime - there is a high rate of murder of 20 per 1000 deaths, and many drugs gangs have control in the favelas. This can make Rio an unattractive or dangerous place to be
- In Favelas - 12% don't have running water, and 30% are without electricity
- Sewage waste goes straight into the sea in the bay
|
|
Opportunities
- Tourism - tourists are attracted by the spectacular beaches (eg Copacabana) and the Tijuca National Park is one of the largest urban forests in the world. Provides employment (tertiary)
- Transport - with more industrial work, infrastructure can improve (roads, etc)
- Education - Rio has a number of universities and is a centre for research and development in Brazil
|
Threats
- Pollution - air pollution from the new factories (as the manufacturing industry takes off), traffic, and water pollution from sewage and industrial waste
- Crime - remains high in the favelas, however pacification programmes have greatly reduced the issue
- Waste collection - difficult in the favelas (where there's a lot of waste) due to the narrow alleys
