Limestone Issues

Advantages

  • The limestone industry provides employment opportunities
  • Greater trade boosts the local economy
  • The industries improve local infrastructure where they locate

Disadvantages

  • The industries produce air and noise pollution
  • There is greater traffic in the area as more people need to get to work at the industries
  • There is a loss of habitat for wildlife when space is needed to build industries

Evaluation

We depend on the limestone industry heavily.  We use it to build buildings with (not only limestone blocks, but also cement, mortar and concrete).  We need calcium hydroxide to neutralise acids in industry.  Although there are many disadvantages to the limestone industry, at the moment we have no substitute for it.
