Advantages
- Studies use incidental learning, not intentional, adding ecological validity as that is how we learn in real life
- Theory open to empirical testing - generally the results of studies support predictions
- Explains why some things are remembered better than others
- Shows that perception, attention and memory are interdependent as memory traces are formed due to attention and perception - major contribution to the understanding of memory

Disadvantages
- Study not fully ecologically valid - still an artificial lab task
- Doesn't define 'deep processing'. No sufficient way to measure depth of processing
