Leve et al (2010)

Advantages

  • The size of the sample and its focus on being representative is a strength, and means it can be generalised.
  • The researchers gathered data using a variety of methods, which means they could use triangulation to check the reliability of the data (comparing results from different methods).
  • They collected cortisol 6 times which could increase reliability.

Disadvantages

  • Hard to show cause-and-effect relationships between the variables as they were difficult to measure.
  • For example, it was hard to measure attention to frustration and hard to relate to later aggressive behaviour.
  • Inferring genetic influence from looking at birth mother and child similarities is not the same thing as using DNA to show genotype.
  • The findings of the DNA analysis were not reported.
