Evaluate Taylor's theory.

Advantages

  • raised efficiency + productivity - employees + costs down, profits up
  • work became more formal + better organised
  • techniques encouraged mass production
  • research was a starting point for later theorists - suited the time

Disadvantages

  • believed people were only motivated by money - ignored personal + social dimension of employees
  • ideas unpopular w/ some shop floor workers + TU's as work became more boing - lead to industrial action
  • assumed there was only one way of carrying out a task - ignored other methods/ideas

Evaluation

FREDERICK WINSLOW TAYLOR (1856-1915) - method now called method study + work measurement, he said jobs should be broken down so employees could specialise + equipment could be invented to speed up work. The concept of division of labour came from this. Said that workers motivated primarily by money + advocated penalties for those who did not meet set targets. Taylor felt each job had 'planning' element + 'doing' element. His main principles were: measurement of the job, division of labour, monitoring of work + control workforce through punishment + reward.
