Empiricist perspective on learning conceptual information

Advantages

  • Neonates can combine different modalities of perception
  • Abilities shown from only a few weeks old
  • Evidence of hidden object representation (Baillargeon, 1987)

Evaluation

Infants can infer appearance from texture and imitate motor movements from vision. As they are so young, these abilities are not likely based on experience. Infants also seem to show that they understand that a hidden object is still there and expect it to act like an object, even if they do not search for it.
