Causes

  • Magnitude : 6.6
  • Shallow - hypocentre depth: 7 km
  • Time: 5:26 am (most were asleep)
  • Focus was right beneath the city
  • Very intense shaking
  • Old, vulnerable buildings and buildings of poor quality

Effects

  • 26,000 deaths, 30,000 injuries, 100,000 homeless
  • 90% of buildings destroyed
  • 3 main hospitals were destroyed - 20% of healthcare professionals were killed, and the remainder were injured so incapable of caring for patients
  • In the search + rescue, emergency services struggled because their buildings + infrastructure were damaged
  • Cold winter temps meant that many trapped victims died of hypothermia
  • Destruction of the city decreased tourism and it cost $1bn to rebuild

Overall summary

The Bam earthquake turned into a disaster because of a set of interactions, including the timing of the event, the structural integrity of buildings, the cold temperatures and the loss of medical facilities.
