Advantages & Disadvantages of our Sites

Advantages

  • Short 15 minute coach journey - minimizes disruption to other college subjects
  • Overall cost only £3 - affordable to all students, giving them first hand experience
  • Sites close to the source - river wasn't deep and had a weak current, making it safe to take measurements from
  • Sites were easily split up between class groups
  • There was a footpath that could easily be followed over the river's course
  • There was varied land use, increasing the depth of the investigation
  • Evidence of fluvial landforms
  • The sites were close to main roads and accessible

Disadvantages

  • Small channel - had to use a 3m stretch instead of 10m stretch because the river's straight did not flow for 10m
  • Lots of overhanging branches - safety hazard and also some had fallen in the channel, disrupting measurements

Evaluation

The sites we chose generally made the investigation a lot swifter, easier and safer and brought about the best efficiency. However, there were a few problems that affected the data we collected.
