Advantages & Disadvantages of IVF

Advantages

  • gives people a chance of having fertilised eggs
  • decreased risk of baby having a disability
  • NHS funds first two cycles
  • same sex couples can have children
  • rarely harmful
  • success rate is improving

Disadvantages

  • not very successfull
  • expensive
  • usually have lots of children at once. So the person may only want one child
  • not natural
  • destroys frozen unused embryos
  • multiple births are likely to make babies premature
  • painful (sometimes)
  • health problems for mother +baby
  • couples may want 'designer babies' with 'desirable' qualities, so may only want certain fertilised eggs. For example, they may want a girl if they have lots of boys in the family, or they may wish to avoid producing a baby with an inherited defect.

Evaluation

balanced argument, more disadvantages than advantages but it is a really strong scientific step and has proved successful with many. Having said that, we are in a recession and so money should be kept in concern and as well as ethical implications.
