  • Menstrual Cycle and Fertility
    • Pituitary gland produces FSH- causes egg to mature in ovaries and stimulates oestrogen
      • Ovaries produce oestrogen- inhibits further production of FSH and stimulates LH and womb lining to develop to receive fertilised egg
        • Pituitary gland produces LH- stimulates release of mature egg from the ovary
    • Contraceptive pill may contain oestrogen and progesterone. Some pills progesterone-only with fewer side effects
      • Prevents production of FSH so no eggs mature
      • Advantages- pill reduces family size which reduces poverty in some areas and allows women to plan their pregnancies
      • Disadvantage-can causes side effects and some people object for ethical or religious reasons
    • FSH and LH given in fertility treatment for women who can't produce mature eggs
      • Advantages- helps infertile couples having IVF, which helps them have a baby
      • Disadvantage-expensive process and some people think it's unethical when older women have babies by IVF and embryos can be stored or destroyed
    • Fertility drug injected to mature many eggs for collection
      • Eggs collected injected with sperm in a lab
        • Embryo grows and implanted into uterus
