Advantages and Disadvantages of Breast Feeding

Advantages

  • Breast Milk has no cost (free).
  • No preparation is needed.
  • Clean so it doesn't need sterillising.
  • Breast milk contains the same nutrients for the baby as does in a formula feed.
  • Breast fed babies have a good bacteria in their lage intestine which stops the growth of bad bacteria.
  • Breast feeding requires more sucking which helps the baby's lungs to develop.
  • Breast feeding helps the mother to lose weight after pregnancy.
  • Breast feeding enables the mother and baby to bond.
  • Breast milk can be expressed using a pump- so ideal for busy mother's (work).

Disadvantages

  • The mother's breast can get chapped and sore
  • Some women may get Mastitis ( a painful inflammation of the breast)
  • Milk could leak if the breasts are full.
  • The mother may have certain diet restrictions as a result of breastfeeding.
  • The father may feel left out because he will not have an opportunity to care for the baby.

Evaluation

There are many more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to breastfeeding.
