      • Jesus, full of the holy spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil.
    • Last line
      • When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. (key line)
    • Who was there?
      • Jesus
      • Devil
    • The temptations
      • Temptation 1
        • Devil said: "If you are the son of God, tell this stone to become bread."
        • Jesus replied: "Man does not live on bread alone."
        • This reminds us that we need the spiritual food of God's word.
      • Temptation 2
        • Devil said: "I will give you all their authority and splendor ... if you worship me, it will all be yours."
        • Jesus replied: "Worship the Lord your God and serve him only."
        • Jesus maintains it is God alone who he is willing to worship.
      • Temptation 3
        • Devil said: "If you are the son of God throw yourself down from here. For it is written 'he will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully... so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"
        • Jesus replied: "It says: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
        • Jesus is not prepared to put God to the test, instead he is content to trust in God's power.
