      • In favour of democracy as willing to vote
    • When government did get things right, there was rise in support  (1924-29)
      • When the government failed a right-wing president was elected by popular vote (Hindenburg) and then Nazis won a rapid rise to power (dismantled Weimar constitution)
    • SPD support Weimar constitution
    • No criticism about the ideas behind the constitution just blamed for the reparations
    • middle-class business people, Catholics and the professional classes supported the Republic
