    • Types of slaves
      • Domestic slaves
        • lived in the oikos and did all the home chores with the Kyria. Male slaves would help the farming. Females could be wet nurses
        • Weren't usually paid but depended on individual family.
      • Wage - earning slaves
        • belonged to wealthier families who made profit with their slaves
        • earned money, so could buy their freedom.
      • Public Slaves
        • owned by the state, not privately
        • police force was made up by these slaves
        • could be public executioner, street sweeper, employees of public mines
        • earned money
    • Treatment of slave
      • had few rights
        • couldn't vote
        • couldn't marry
      • commonly used for sexual gratifcation
      • could buy freedom, but was uncommon
      • could be physically punished (eg flogging) but if were tortured they could bring their owners to court
      • their welcome
        • formally accepted with religious ceremonies like a new born baby
      • legal protection
        • illegal to kill someone else's or own slave
      • Asylum
        • could seek refuge at a religious alter if felt like their master treated them badly. The master would then be forced to sell the slave, or swear an oath to treat their slave better.
