- Domestic slaves
- lived in the oikos and did all the home chores with the Kyria. Male slaves would help the farming. Females could be wet nurses
- Weren't usually paid but depended on individual family.

- belonged to wealthier families who made profit with their slaves
- earned money, so could buy their freedom.
- Public Slaves
- owned by the state, not privately
- police force was made up by these slaves
- could be public executioner, street sweeper, employees of public mines

- could buy freedom, but was uncommon
- could be physically punished (eg flogging) but if were tortured they could bring their owners to court
