- 22 boys 11yrs old
- all similar to each other with same interests
- white, sporty, above average IQ, protestant
- opportunity sample
- handpicked from Oaklahoma schools
- parents gave presumptive consent
- not told everything
- paid $25 not to visit
- divided into equally matched groups but didn't know about other group

- stayed w/boys for 12h each day

- prizes and rewards w/ scores
- scores rigged to keep tension high
- orchestrated situations that would be frustrating

- mere contact in group dinners failed - food fight
- superordinate goals
- fixing water tank that gave water to both groups
- starting broken down camp bus
- joint campover as had to work together for food and sleeping gear
- Results
- boys needed little encouragement to be competitive
- aggressive behaviour between boys
- eagles burned rattlers flag
- rattler night raid to eagles
- eagles won tournament but rattlers stole prizes
- originally eagles had 6.4% friendships w/ outgroup but had 36.4% at end
- each superordinate goal reduced hostility
- RCT supported, leaders est quickly, mere contact does not reduce hostility
