- likert scales: one which the respondent indicates their agreement with a statement uisng a scale of usually 5 points. (strongly disagree to strongly agree)
- ratingg scales: works in similar way to likert scale but gets respondent to identify a value that represents their strength of feeling about a particular topic
- fixed choice options: includes list of posible options and respondents are require to indicate those that apply to them
- designing interviews:
- the interviewer should have a list of questions they want to cover
- should be standardised to reduce the contaminating effect of interviewer bias
- interviewes invoolve and interviewers and a single participant
- 1:1 interviews in quiet room, away from others
- begin with neutral questions- get the interviewee relaxed and comfortable
- interviewees should be reminded that their answers will be treated with structest confidence
- writing good questions: clarity essential when designing questionares/ interviews
- overuse of jargon: techniqual terms are only familiar to those within a specialised field or area
- best questions are simple and easily understood
- emotive language and leading questions:
- emotive language should be replaced with neutral alternatives
- leading questions guides the respondent towards a particular answer
- leading questions can also assume the person has done/said something
- double barrelled questions and double negatives
- 2 questions in 1, respondents may agree with one half of the question but not the other half
- double negatives can be difficult for respondents to decipher
