General cognitive explanation
Dysfunctional behaviour arises due to faulty or illogical thinking. E.g. catasrophisation or overgeneralisation. Also the cognitive triad.

Beck - Aim
To understand cognitive distortion in depressed patients.

Participants
50 patients diagnosed with depression. 16 M 34 F aged 18-48.

Design
Independent measures with matched pairs - compared with 31 non-depressed patients undergoing psychotherapy. Matched for age, gender and social position.

Procedure
Interviews with retrospective reports of patients thoughts before the session as well as spontaneous reports of throughts during the session. Some patients kept diaries of their thoughts that were brought to each session. Records kept of non-depressd

Findings
Certain themes appeared: Self-blame, low self esteem, overwhelming responsibilities. Felt unlovable and alone and reacted stereotypically. Distortions were automatic, involuntary, plausible and persistant.

Conclusion
Patients have cognitive distortions that deviate from logical and realistic thinking - even in mild depression.
