- Everyone in the target population has an equal chance of being selected
- 1. Obtain a complete list of all members of the target population.
- 2. Put the names in a hat and pull out the number of participants required.
- STRENGTH
- Least biased – all members of the target population have an equal chance of being selected so more likely to be representative
- WEAKNESS
- No guarantee that the sample will be representative, however having large numbers of participants can help to ensure the sample is representative
