    • APGAR
      • Assessing 5 Vital Signs
        • Heartbeat
        • Breathing
        • Muscle Tone
        • Reflex Response
        • Colour
      • Score given to evaluate physical condition of a newborn.
      • Conducted straight after birth and then every five minutes until the baby scores a 6.
      • Most children score a 9/10.
    • Skin
      • Salmon Patches
        • Flat red/pink patches.
        • More noticeable when the child cries.
        • Can take between 3 months- 4+ years to fade.
        • Appear on eyelids, neck or forehead at birth.
      • Mongolian Spots
        • Blueish patches can look like bruises.
        • More common on black skin or on the babies bottom.
        • Usually disappear by the age of 4.
      • Infantile Haemangiomas (Strawberry Marks)
        • Raised red marks on skin.
        • Appear anywhere on the skin.
        • Grow in the first 6mths and disappear by the age of 7yrs
      • Vernix and Lanugo
        • Vernix
          • White waxy substance that covers baby's skin in womb.
          • Babies still have this on their skin at birth.
          • Natural Moisturiser and protective layer that protect baby from infection.
          • If baby is overdue, vernix will already have absorbed and they baby will have dry, cracked skin.
        • Lanugo
          • Soft, fine hair; usually unpigmented
          • Helps regulate the baby's temperature and is normally shed around the 7-8th month of pregnancy.
          • Sometimes the baby will be born with the layer of lanugo, but it will be shed in a few days.
    • Physical Checks
      • Weight and Length
        • Recorded on centile charts.
        • 6-9lbs and 50-53cm
        • So comparisons can be made to check the child is developing at the correct rate.
      • Head Circumference
        • Took to track the baby's development.
        • Shape and Circumference is assessed at birth.
        • A squashed appearance is common as a result of the baby being pushed through the birth canal.
      • Fontanelle
        • Skull bones not fully fused together yer.
        • These spots are covered by a tough protective membrane.
        • Take 1yr+ before fused together.
      • Eyes
        • Don't check Vision
        • Check for conditions such as Cataracts.
        • Shine a light to check reflex.
      • Mouth
        • Check for Sucking Reflex.
        • Place a finger in mouth to check roof of mouth is complete.
      • Feet
        • Toes are counted and checked for webbing.
        • Check foots Natural Resting Position
      • Hands
        • Fingers are counted and checked for webbing.
        • Check palm of hand for 2 creases as 1 crease is associated with Downs
      • Hips
        • Check for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hips.
        • Check hip joints join properly
    • Reflexes
      • Sucking Reflex
        • Touch roof of baby's mouth they will make sucking mtions
      • Rooting Reflex
        • When the Baby's lips or cheek is touched, they will root for the ****** or teat.
      • Grasp Reflex
        • Touch a baby's palm they will grasp your finger.
      • Standing/ Walking Reflex
        • When help up right a baby will make stepping movemnets.
      • Startle Reflex
        • If a baby wakes suddenly or hears a loud noise they will make a fist and move still arms away from their body.
