- Flight to Varennes
- Intial acception by Louis of the revolution, he agreed to work toward a constitutional monarchy. 2 problems changed this.
- 1) his religion; avoiding going to mass from Priests who swore the oath.
- 2) realisation that negotiation was weak
- Royal family leave in disguise. Recognised and sent back. Louis had left behind a proclamation denouncing the revolution.
- Results:
- 1) Louis hadn't understood the popular changes of 89; not understanding the people.
- 2) No trust.
- 3) Constitutional monarchy wasn't going to work.
- 4) support for republicanism.

- Political Clubs
- Jacobin
- Members came from wealthier society. Many deputies and discussed issues within the National Assembly.
- Pressure group for revolutionary ideas.
- Robespierre emerged as leader.
- Robespierre:
- Radical Jacobins argued Louis had abdicated at the FoV. This split the club.
- Cordeliers
- District of Paris. Members poorer men and women and was more radical than the Jacobins.
- Leadership more bourgeoisie. Danton, Desmoulins, Marat and Hebert.
- Saw their role as keeping an eye on the NA deputies.
- Club Monarchique
- Counter-revolutionary. Included mainly 1st and 2nd estate members.
- Sponsored propaganda, links with emigres.
- Jacobin
- Champ de Mars 17th July 1791
- Cordeliers organised a signing ceremony for a republican petition. 50,000 attended. National Guard called under Lafayette. Fired on the crowd, killed 50.
- Brissot and Danton fled and Cordeliers club started to shut down.
- Flight to Varennes
