      • Insider - have close lniks with Govt. Given advice & consulted about issues

      • Sectional - only open to certain individuals. Represent a particular section of society

      • Outsider - no close Govt. links. Takes action which Govt. disapproves.
        • 'ALF'
      • Permanent - groups that are always going to have something to represent. Tends to be sectional also

      • Promotional - have open membership to the public. Promotes a cause

      • Ad-Hoc - Temporary group which disband when their cause is complete.

      • Long-term campaign for improvement of some area in society.

    • 3 Approaches
      • Pluralist Approach
        • Provide expert views and inform Govt.
        • Refelcted views of 'ordinary' people who were entitled to have them.
        • Allowed minority voices to be heard - caters for diverse mix of views
      • New Right Approach
        • Expresses alarm about power of other groups
        • Sees groups as promoting own concerns rather than the whole societies.
        • Against insider groups - believe they have easy access & can easily change views
      • Marxist Approach
        • See control in society being exercised by the ruling economic group - make decisions to serve its own interest
        • Believes wealthier minority should influence Govt. & society as a whole - not smaller minority groups.
        • Draws attention to the unequal distribution between employees & employers
