- Except housing benefit, which is dealt with via the Local Authority
- The DSS produce a number of leaflets which set out people's rights and entitlements
- Benefits can be the same for everyone e.g. child benefit, or they may be means tested which is when an account is taken of any income or savings before a benefit is awarded.
- Sometimes no benefit is awarded because the person is applying with too many savings
- Reduced benefit may be given if the person applying have some savings or income.
- Some benefits are only payable if the individual has paid contributons towards National Insurance
- Sick pay, maternity pay, pensions and unemployme-nt benefits
