  • Milgram's Variation Studies
    • Run Down Office Block Experiment 10
      • AIM - To test whether setting has an effect on levels  obedience shown.
      • The original variation was conducted at Yale university which was said later to have had an effect on obedience levels as its a prestige setting.
      • In this variation, it was conducted at a run down office block known as Bridgeport. Participants were told the study was being conducted for a private firm.
      • RESULTS - 47% participants showed full obedience and some were reported to have questioned the legitimacy beforehand.
      • Milgram concluded that context is an important factor to whether people are obedient or not.
    • Telephonic Instructions: Experiment 7
      • AIM- To test if proximity has a role in individuals  obedience levels.
      • In this variation  the teacher would give the instructions to the learner over the phone and not in the same room.
      • RESULTS - only 22% were fully obedient and some lied and said they increasing the voltage when they weren't
      • They found it easier to disobey as they didn't have to confront an authority figure, but when the observer came back into the room, the ones who were defiant were soon obedient again.
      • Milgram concluded that the physical appearance of the authority figure was an important factor to whether they are obedient or not.
    • Ordinary Man Experiment 4
      • AIM - Milgram wanted to test whether people obey orders due to the strength of the command or the person giving orders
      • In this variation the teacher was a confederate who would get a fake phone call and have to leave, he then left the teacher role to an ordinary man to ask the questions.
      • RESULTS - 80% refused to continue when orders came from an ordinary man.
      • Milgram concluded that for a person to obey orders they must come form a legitimate source of authority
  • MILGRAMS ORIGINAL RESULTS = 65% continued to 450V
