- Strengths
- It can explain why different cultured tend to see the misuse of different substances, as people will be more likely to try a drug seen as 'cool' in their culture in order to gain more social reinforcement
- Many drugs are known to produce a strong immediate effect which will positively reinforce use and help infuse a 'taste' for the drug
- Weaknesses
- Not everyone succumbs to social pressure to participate (e.g. in heavy drinking), so opeant conditioning cannot explain why some people resist social approval of drug taking
- Some drugs produce unpleasant side effects when first taken which should put users off, yet many presist into addiction (e.g. nicotine)
