  • Factors affecting the character of place
    • Socio-economic factors
      • economic characteristics are factors to do with work and money
      • economic factors can directly contribute to the character of places e.g. places such as Kensington, London have a high proportion of above average earners and low unemployment and as such are characterised as wealthy
    • Cultural Factors
      • These are factors such as heritage, religion and language
      • A place with a multi-cultural population will have a different character to another
    • Land use
      • refers to the human activities that occur on the land
      • this is important for directly defining the character of paces
      • Land use affects other factors that give places their character. E.g. high-rise buildings are often required for businesses in busy town centres
      • land use changes over time. For example processes such as deindustrialisation can lead to industrial land being used for other purposes
    • Mobility
      • The mobility of the population is important for work and leisure purposes. This hugely changes the character of a place
    • Political factors
      • The role and strength of local councils and/or resident groups
    • Built environment and infrastructure
      • this refers to the aspects of places that are built by humans
      • infrastructure specifically refers to the structures build for transport, communications and services e.g. roads
      • Places can be characterised directly by their build environment and infrastructure
        • Town and city centres will have higher density buildings, may have tower blocks are are likely to have complex and dense networks of roads and railtracks as well as communication networks and sewers
        • Villages will have fewer, smaller buildings at a lower density and less complex infrastructure networks. They may have built features such as market squares or village halls
    • Location
      • refers to where a place is- in a rural area or an urban area
      • Places can be characterised by the features that are present because of their location
    • Demographic factors
      • Demographic characteristics are about who lives in a place and what they're like. Demographic factors include things like age, gender, education level, religion, birth rates, ethnicity and population size
      • Demographic factors can directly contribute to the character of places, e.g. many people retire to seaside location, which means they have higher populations of older people
    • Physical Geography
      • This refers to the environmental features of a place
      • Places can be directly characterised by their physical geography
      • Physical geography also affects other factors that give places their character
    • Topography
      • this refers to the shape of the landscape
      • places can be characterised directly by their topography e.g. in a valley places would be characterised as flat
      • Topography also affects other factors that give places their character. E.g. land use- flat places may be suitable for large scale arable farminh
