- why were they significant
- these were the first people to travel across to the west and the first to make contact and trade with the native Americans
- they sold guns and alcohol to the Natives, this made the natives slightly more reliant on the east
- they acted as guides to the west for the early settlers who came first
- the mountain men were fur traders from the east of America who were looking to hunt animals in the Rockies and sell them to the europeans

- the population of Missouri was 25 times bigger than in 1830 by 1840 and so there was no farmland left
- the price of wheat was going down so farmers were going broke
- there was an economic depression and peoples wages were being cut by 40%
- the Mormons were pushed out of everywhere they lived and their leader was killed

- the mountain men and the newspapers said it was beautiful and amazing
- the government guaranteed cheap land in Oregon
- gold was discovered in California and Pikes Peak
- the Mormons could practise polygamy at the great salt lake as it was Mexican land

- in 1848 gold was discovered in california
- in 1849 a massive group of miners went over to California to try and make quick money
- when the miners were unsuccessful, professional miners et up towns and made mining gold profitable

- the religion was founded by Joseph smith
- he said that an angel had come to him and told him to find gold tablets in the mountains detailing the new book of mormon
- people were suspicious as he said nobody could look at the tablets other than him and so people said he was a fraud
- the religion grew and so they moved to Kirtland, Ohio

- they worked hard in Kirtland and got themselves a bank, mill and a store.
- people didn't like them and so when the bank collapsed and the people lost all their money, the Mormons were chased out
- they then fled to missouri

- in Missouri the Mormons still grew. but now they considered themselves saints and everyone else 'gentiles' this annoyed a lot of non-Mormons and set up their later troubles
- rumours of them having a secret police and them trying to take over caused trouble and they were chased out again

- they went to a small commerce town in Illinois and called it Nauvoo. here they could create their own laws and build a city of god.
- the Mormons built a good city and by 1844, it was the biggest city in Illinios
- problems started when Joseph smith said he had received a revelation from god that polygamy was allowed and so, lots of the Mormons were horrified, they said that Smith should go to prison and he did.
- Joseph was killed when a group of non-Mormons attacked his prison

- the Mormons travelled west under the leadership of Brigham Young to create a colony at the great salt lake
- the city they built prospered and so they sent missionaries to Europe to try and bring people in. they paid for the journey to make it seem more appealing
- they applied to get a state but this was rejected, with them getting a territory called Utah instead
- the Mormons eventually fell after they attacked a group of travellers who attacked them whiles going west. the army came in and took away Brigham's power
