- DNA probes
- short single stranded section of DNA
- labeled
- radioactively: probe is made up of nucleotides which contain 32P. this will expose a photographic plate
- site where probe binds can be identified
- fluorescently: probes emit light under certain conditions

- how do the probes work?
- the probe has a base sequence complementary to the portion of the DNA sequence that makes up the gene which we want to find.
- DNA to be tested split into its two seperate strands.
- strands and probes mix. probe binds to complementary bases on one strand (DNA hydridisation)
