If a mutation affects a dominant allele, who will be affected?
ALL individuals.
1 of 8
If a mutation affects a recessive allele, who will be affected?
Only individuals who have two recessive alleles.
2 of 8
Why is it important to screen people who may carry a mutant allele?
Screening can determine the probability of a couple having offspring with a genetic disorder.
3 of 8
How are DNA libraries created?
You can fix hundreds of different DNA probes in a pattern on a glass slide. By adding a sample of DNA, complimentary DNA sequences in the DNA will bind to one or more probes. In this way, testing simultaneously for many different disororders at once.
4 of 8
How can genetic screening be used for detecting cancer?
It can detect oncogenes, which are responsible for cancer.
5 of 8
How can a DNA probe be developed for genetic screening?
Order of nucleotides on mutated gene is determined by sequencing. DNA with complimentary bases to mutated portion of gene are produced. DNA probe is formed by radiactively labelling the DNA fragment.
6 of 8
How can DNA probes be used in genetic screening?
If donor has mutated gene then some of the DNA will be complimentary to the probe, which attaches. The DNA probe will be taken up and the x-ray film WILL be exposed. If the probe is not taken up then the film WILL NOT be exposed.

List 4 issues with genetic screening?
Who decides who should be screened? Who has access to the test results? What are the responsibilities of someone who carries a gene? Who decides what is a defect or a disease? Does mankind have a responsibility to maintain genetic diversity?
