- A healthy diet contains 7 kinds of nutrient:
- Carbohydrate
- Protien
- Lipids
- Minerals
- Vitamins
- Fibre
- Water
- Each person needs a different amount of energy, depending on factors such as:
- Gender
- Age
- Amount of daily activity
- A nutrient is a substance needed by organisms to stay alive and healthy
- If the amount of energy you get from food is more than you need your diet becomes imbalanced (fat/thin)
- Nutrients, uses, sources
- Carbohydrates are to provide energy, breads,rice
- Proteins are for growth and repair, fish, meat, eggs
- Lipids are to provide energy and to store it, oils, butter, nuts
- Minerals are to maintain health, salt, milk, liver
- Vitamins are maintain health, fruit, vegetables
- Fibre is to prevent roughage and to keep food moving through gut, bran, vegetables
- Vitamin deficiencies
- Only need small amounts to stay healthy
- Vitamin deficiencies can make you ill
- Vitamin A deficiency can cause blindness
- Vitamin C deficiency can cause scurvy, bleeding gums
- Iron deficiency can cause anaemia, few red blood cell
- Mineral deficiences
- You only need small amounts of the different minerals in your diet to stay healthy
- Mineral deficiencies can make ill
- Too little food may lead to a person being underweight
- Too much food may lead to a person being overwieght
