- In the 20th century the Madagascan government sold rain forest timber to pay the interest on international debt.
- illegal logging is a big issue because:
- There is high demand for rosewood timber
- Illegal logging pays well tempting for the vast number of poor Madagascans
- Police and government officials often allow illegal logging in return for money.
- Social causes
- The increese in population= more pressure on the amount of land needed for agriculture farmers use their tavy plots which exhausts soil fertility meaning more plots have to be cleared
