    • Unemployment provision
      • 1929 Local Government Act &1934 Unemployment Act
        • Local gov. and councils set up Public Assistance Committees (PACs)
          • Gave power to means-test claimants: their combined household income was thoroughly investigated to judge eligibility of dole payments
          • Hated- Means-test was unfair. Some PACs were less stringent with their tests than others.
            • Invasion of privacy
          • End of 1931, 400,000 people had suffered rejected or reduced claims because of the test
    • Pensions
      • 1908 Pensions Act
        • State pensions introduced.
          • Hugely popular with over-70s
      • 1925 Widows, Orphans and Old Age Contributory Pensions Act
        • Provided pension of 10 shillings/week for those aged 65-70 and provided for widows and children
          • Funded by compulsory contributions (individuals, employers, and the state paid into the scheme) rather than taxation
          • Self employed workers of both sexes were allowed to join the scheme in 1937
    • Housing
      • 1919 Housing and Town Planning Act
        • AIM: Empower local  authorities to use central Gov.  funds to meet housing needs
        • Only 213,000 were constructed (600,000 needed to meet demand ) before the Geddes Axe
          • RESULT: Housing shortage grew worse
            • Shortfall of 822,000 houses in1923
      • Conservative and Labour Housing Acts 1923 and 1924
        • AIM: To use subsidies to encourage the construction of private and state-owned housing.
          • Together with a further Labour Housing Act in 1930 promoted a great deal of housebuilding
          • 1919- 1940- 4 million homes were built in total
            • By 1940- 1/3 of all houses had been built since 1918
