- Convection currents caused by particles gaining more energy and then moving further apart
- Makes the gas or liquid less dense
- Particles move to cooler regions taking the energy with them
- Can't happen in solids as their particles are in fixed positions

- A radiator can heat a room as convection currents from it circulate in the air around the whole room
- In a fridge the freezer compartment at the top cools the air around it
- The air then sinks causing the convection currents to circulate
