  • Convection
    • In liquids and gases
    • Convection currents caused by particles gaining more energy and then moving further apart
      • Makes the gas or liquid less dense
      • Particles move to cooler regions taking the energy with them
      • Can't happen in solids as their particles are in fixed positions
    • Convection in the Home
      • Heat is transferred by convection in kettles, pans, immersion heaters and hot water tanks
      • A radiator can heat a room as convection currents from it circulate in the air around the whole room
      • In a fridge the freezer compartment at the top cools the air around it
        • The air then sinks causing the convection currents to circulate
