- Being a Gentleman
- Gentlemen in Victorian society were form the upper class
- They were expected to have strong morals and be kind
- Profession was also important as army officers, church ministers, doctors and lawyers would all be considered to be gentlemen
- They were determined to maintain their reputations
- They were expected to keep their bad desires hidden and were prepared to pay large sums of money to keep these activities private
- Working-class London
- The Industrial Revolution meant that many working-class people migrated to large cities like London
- Due to housing having to be built rapidly to accommodate workers, the homes were of very low quality
- Gentlemen would not want to be seen in these lower-class areas but would often secretly visit these areas at night
- Conditions were very bad in lower class areas with whole families living in one or two rooms and no proper sanitation
- Victorian Religion and Science
- Christianity had a strong influence on life in Victorian England
- Evangelicalism, one branch of Christianity, taught that all people are naturally sinful and individuals should seek forgiveness from God
- The Victorian Era was a time of lots of scientific discoveries
- In 1859, Darwin's theory of evolution was published and was very controversial
