  • Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
    • Context:
      • In 1859, Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species.Many people saw it as an attack on religion, because the book made it impossible to believe that God created the world in seven days.
        • The book was released when many people thought they had to choose between either religion or science. Many believed that science had become dangerous and was meddling in matters which only God had control over. This is what Jekyll does in the novel.
      • Many Victorians thought of the idea that humans have dual of nature. This was due to the notorious Jack the ripper was around in 1888, who said to be  even royal birth. This has connections to Jekyll and Hyde.
    • Themes
      • Duality of human nature:  Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is an examination of the duality of human nature, as most clearly expressed in the revelation that Mr. Hyde is in fact Dr. Jekyll, only transformed into a his evil side.
      • Importance of reputation: Utterson works to prevent Dr. Jekyll from being dragged into the horrid affairs of Mr. Hyde, and Dr. Jekyll goes to the greatest of lengths to prevent his Hyde identity from being discovered, in order to avoid anyone knowing of his questionable morally despicable behaviour.
