  • Black Panther Movement
    • Origin
      • Huey Newton and Bobby Seale extended previous ideas of armed black groups to found movement
      • Founded in Oakland, California
    • Armed
      • Weapons carried openly and defence groups were formed against police brutality
      • In some areas fighting broke out in streets
      • Distinctive Black Panther salute was made by two AA athletes in 1968 Olympics, much to consternation of white America
      • 1972 Black Power convention excluded WAs
    • Political demands had gone considerably beyond those of mid-1960s mainstream movement.
    • Aims included
      • Economic equality
      • End to capitalist exploitation
      • Compensation in form of land and housing
      • Separate juries for black people and protection from police intimidation
    • White state versus separate black culture
      • Black Power movement was going back to Washington's idea of 'dipping your bucket'
        • Being self-reliant but in a very different way
      • Movement had more in common with Garvey's organisation
      • Did not attract huge membership
      • Heavily influenced by Nation of Islam
    • Goals too diffuse to be easily realised
    • Separatist organisations gave rise to new confidence and pride in being black and sense that white values could be challenged rather than accepted
    • Achievements of civil rights began to look as limited as achievements of Reconstruction in promoting harmonious society
