  • B2.3 - Heart disease
    • Heart rate: measured by measuring pulse rate
    • Blood pressure
      • The pressure against artery walls
      • bigger over smaller, contracting over relaxing
      • High = increased heart disease
    • Factors
      • Exercise decreases risk
      • high cholesterol =fatty deposits, high salt and stress = high blood pressure
      • Epidemio-logical studies look for common lifestyle and genetic factors
    • Blood vessels
      • Capillaries - walls only 1 cell, permeable
      • Veins are the vay in, thinner walls, bigger lumen, valves
      • Arteries take blood away, strong elastic walls to cope with pressure
    • Cause of heart attacks
      • Inner lining of artery, smooth normally, can be damaged by high blood pressure. fatty deposits build restricting blood flow. if deposit breaks through lining, blood clot forms, blocked artery. if coronary artery blocked, heart attack
    • Substance misuse
      • Drugs raise heart rate
      • Alcohol raises blood pressure
      • Smoking - CO reduces oxygen=heart attack, nicotine increases heart rate
