    • before WW1 women were very restricted- had to be chaperoned & dress modestly in most states they were expected to be housewives
    • very few paid jobs were open to women & were lower-paid jobs like cleaning, dressmaking, secretarial work etc.
    • rural USA= particularly tight restrictions= churches' traditional attitude towards role of women
    • many things changed especially for urban/middle-class women
    • 1920 = US women get right to vote in all states
    • during WW1, war jobs opened for women like in war industries, skilled factory work etc.
    • they shared liberating effect of car & domestic work was made easier by new electrical goods
    • younger urban women began to do things people looked down on
      • like going out without chaperone, smoking in public places, drinking, kissing in public, wearing daring clothes etc.
    • the FLAPPER was introduced
    • urban areas more women took on jobs created by new industries
    • 1929: 10 million women jobs= 24% more than in 1920
    • films/novels exposed women to a much wider range of models
    • newspaper, magazine & film industries found that sex sold much better than anything else
    • traditional religion & old country values still restricted women
    • women paid less than men in same jobs
    • inequality in politics- only a handful of women elected in 1929
