- Position of Women in Society
- before WW1 women were very restricted- had to be chaperoned & dress modestly in most states they were expected to be housewives
- very few paid jobs were open to women & were lower-paid jobs like cleaning, dressmaking, secretarial work etc.
- rural USA= particularly tight restrictions= churches' traditional attitude towards role of women
- many things changed especially for urban/middle-class women
- 1920 = US women get right to vote in all states
- during WW1, war jobs opened for women like in war industries, skilled factory work etc.
- they shared liberating effect of car & domestic work was made easier by new electrical goods
- younger urban women began to do things people looked down on
- like going out without chaperone, smoking in public places, drinking, kissing in public, wearing daring clothes etc.
- the FLAPPER was introduced
- urban areas more women took on jobs created by new industries
- 1929: 10 million women jobs= 24% more than in 1920
- films/novels exposed women to a much wider range of models
- newspaper, magazine & film industries found that sex sold much better than anything else
- traditional religion & old country values still restricted women
- women paid less than men in same jobs
- inequality in politics- only a handful of women elected in 1929
