Social and Legal Position of Women in 1890s

Working Class Women

  • 1870, before, most working class women did not go to school.
  •  In 1880, made compulsory for children to attend school.
  •  Girls were taught their roles in society.
  • Working class women went to work.
  •  Towards the end of the nineteenth century many new jobs were prepared.

Middle + Upper Class women

  • Girls from richer families were educated at home.
  • Main aim to make them good wives and mothers.
  • Taught, music, singing and dancing.
