  • Offenders in the Media
    • homicides are more likely to get coverage if they involve sexual motives, revenger or jealousy
    • domestic quarrels that got out of hand and resulted in death get little attention
    • the murder of children, women and famous people gain the most coverage
    • Newburn suggests that coverage can be misleading
      • disproportionately features higher-status individuals and older offenders (most offenders are young)
      • exaggerates the proportion of crimes that are cleared up by the police (they tend to give the stories to the media)
      • exaggerates the risk of being a victim of crime (esp for white, m/c people)
      • tends to present crime as a series of individual incidents and have little coverage of patterns, trends or underlying causes
    • evidence suggests media coverage gives the impression that serious violent and sexual crimes are more common than they are
