- homicides are more likely to get coverage if they involve sexual motives, revenger or jealousy
- domestic quarrels that got out of hand and resulted in death get little attention
- the murder of children, women and famous people gain the most coverage
- Newburn suggests that coverage can be misleading
- disproportionately features higher-status individuals and older offenders (most offenders are young)
- exaggerates the proportion of crimes that are cleared up by the police (they tend to give the stories to the media)
- exaggerates the risk of being a victim of crime (esp for white, m/c people)

- evidence suggests media coverage gives the impression that serious violent and sexual crimes are more common than they are
