Functions and Characteristics of nouns
Only nouns can be subjects. Can take possessive ('s) and plural (s) BUT some have two entries 'a fight' (NOUN) 'I fight' (ACTION VERB)

Verbs (2 types)
MAIN: lexical- clear meaning and content e.g. 'stand', 'look'.Main verbs can indicate actions, states and processes. AUXILIARY: help other verb- I HAVE eaten, he IS swimming. adds subtle grammatical information e.g. aspect or modality

PRESENT participles - end in –ing, e.g. walking, eating. PAST participles - past form of verb, -ed or irregular past form e.g. walked, eaten

Adjectives
Describe quality of a noun. ATTRIBUTIVE:before a noun ('a NICE man') PREDICATIVE: after a copular verb ('The man IS nice')

Adverbs
EXPRESS MANNER- how, where, when, how often. MODIFIES ADJECTIVES- I am SO happy, I feel QUITE chuffed. MODIFIES VERBS- 'ly' e.g. cheerfully

Pronouns
PERSONAL- e.g. I, they. DEMONSTRATIVE- e.g. this, these. INTERROGATIVE (e.g which, who) INDEFINITE (e.g none,) POSSESSIVE (e.g his, your) RECIPROCAL (e.geach other, one another)RELATIVE (eg which, where) REFLEXIVE, INTENSIVE (e.g itself, himself)

Preposition
Relating two events/objects in location, time, or abstractly. E.g. The ball is on the grass, The presents lie under the tree

Determiners
Before a Noun, but it is not an Adjective (so does not describe a quality). Identifies which thing/person/event.ARTICLES: the, a (apple) DEMONSTRATIVES: those (apples) QUANTIFIERS: some, any, no (apples). POSSESSIVES: my, your, one’s, John’s

Conjunctions (also known as connectives) are used to join linguistic elements together. SIMPLE COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS such as “and”, “but” and “or”. These join phrases, clauses and lists of similar items
