What was Roosevelt's background?
He was a privileged relative of ex-president Theodore Roosevelt. He was friendly and optimistic which was a great asset in winning votes.

How did his political career begin?
He began as state senator in NY in 1910. In 1913 he was Assistant Secretary to the Navy in Wilson's government. In 1920 he ran for democratic vice-presidency but that year was a republican victory.

What tragedy had Roosevelt suffered?
In 1921 he caught polio which paralysed his legs and meant he couldn't stand. He refused to let this force him out of politics.

What did he win in 1928?
The election of governor of NY state. He held this office when the depression struck.

What did he accomplish as governor?
He actively fought unemployment. He set up the Temporary Relief Administration which created employment. His illness seemed to gain him sympathy.

Why was his presidential opponent- Hoover- so unpopular?
His tactics to deal with the depression were not working. He did not regard business as the responsiblilty of the government and people thought a vote for Hoover would be a vote for nothing

Why did people vote for Roosevelt?
It was not clear what he intended to do about the depression but it was clear he would do something. The opponents' images were opposite- Roosevelt offered them hope. He won 22.8 million votes to 15.8 million.
